About Traffic Group Signals

Want to learn more about Traffic Group Signals? This article gives a brief overview of our history, philosophy and our commitment to innovation.

Introduction

Traffic Group Signals designs, manufactures and supports advanced portable and temporary traffic signal systems for the traffic management industry.

Our purpose is to help make roadworks and street works safer, greener and more efficient. We combine reliable signal equipment with intelligent software, specialist engineering knowledge and nationwide support to help customers manage everything from straightforward shuttle working to complex, multi-phase junctions.

Who we are

Traffic Group Signals is part of The Traffic Group, a group of specialist UK businesses developing technology for safer and more efficient transport networks.

We work with traffic management providers, civil engineering contractors, utility companies and highway authorities across the UK. Our customers can purchase or hire equipment, access servicing and maintenance, or work with our Professional Services team on complete temporary signalling schemes.

Our product range includes:

  • Portable traffic signals for everyday traffic management
  • Temporary signal systems for complex junctions and crossings
  • Pedestrian and cyclist crossing equipment
  • Intelligent detection and traffic control technologies
  • Signal design, monitoring and asset management software
  • Equipment for haul routes, compounds and other non-highway applications

Our history

Traffic Group Signals was formed in April 2019, bringing together the experience of Pike Signals and Hollco. These established businesses contributed more than 100 years of combined knowledge and experience in portable and temporary traffic signalling.

Pike Signals and Hollco became part of The Traffic Group in 2014. Their combined expertise provided the foundation for a single business focused on advancing temporary traffic signal technology while maintaining the practical knowledge, product reliability and customer support for which both companies were known.

Since its formation, Traffic Group Signals has continued to invest in its products, manufacturing facilities, software, service network and people. This has allowed us to support increasingly demanding applications and help the traffic management industry adopt more intelligent ways of controlling traffic at roadworks.

Our approach to engineering

Temporary traffic signals operate in challenging environments. They must withstand frequent transportation, changing weather, demanding site conditions and continuous operation, while remaining safe and dependable.

Our engineering approach considers the complete life of a product, from its initial design and manufacture through to deployment, operation, maintenance and eventual end-of-life management.

We focus on:

Safety

Safety is fundamental to the way our products and systems are designed. Equipment is developed and tested to meet applicable requirements, with careful consideration given to operational reliability, signal communication, physical stability, electrical performance and use in real-world highway environments.

Reliability

Temporary signal equipment must continue to operate consistently in busy and sometimes unpredictable conditions. Our systems are designed to provide dependable performance, supported by extensive testing and technologies that help maintain communication between signals.

Practical design

We work closely with the people who transport, install, operate and maintain our equipment. Their experience helps us develop products that are practical to deploy, straightforward to use and robust enough for regular site work.

Intelligent control

We apply techniques traditionally associated with permanent traffic signals to temporary applications. This includes stage-based signalling, configurable timing plans, intelligent vehicle detection and integration with Urban Traffic Control systems.

Products such as Evo1 and Metro can be supported by Signal Studio, our specialist signal design software. This allows schemes to be designed, checked, simulated and configured before deployment, helping to reduce roadside changes and improve consistency.

Connected technology

Our TMdesk platform gives customers greater visibility of compatible signal assets. Depending on the equipment and services in use, this can include location, battery information, faults, alerts and asset history.

Connected equipment supports more proactive fleet management and can help customers identify issues before they cause unnecessary site visits or operational disruption.

Supporting our customers

Our role extends beyond manufacturing equipment. We provide services to help customers select, deploy and maintain the right solution for each application.

These services include:

  • Signal hire
  • Equipment servicing, maintenance and repair
  • Technical and product support
  • Scheme design and simulation
  • Pre-deployment testing
  • Delivery and commissioning
  • CCTV and journey-time monitoring
  • Remote site monitoring and support

For more complex schemes, our Professional Services team works alongside traffic management providers, contractors and highway authorities. The team can support the complete project journey, from initial design and stakeholder discussions through to deployment, commissioning and ongoing monitoring.

This collaborative approach allows the traffic management provider to concentrate on the wider delivery of the works while our specialists manage the technical signalling requirements.

Our approach to the environment

Reducing the environmental impact of roadworks requires more than changing the materials used in a product. It also means considering how traffic is managed, how often equipment must be transported or serviced, how efficiently assets are used and what happens to components at the end of their working life.

Our environmental approach includes:

Reducing congestion

Efficient signal control can reduce unnecessary waiting and idling at roadworks. Intelligent detection, appropriate signal timings and responsive traffic plans can help traffic move more effectively, reducing disruption for road users and the communities surrounding a site.

Improving equipment endurance

Longer equipment and battery endurance can reduce the frequency of maintenance visits and battery changes. This helps minimise vehicle movements, staff exposure at the roadside and the resources required to keep a site operating.

Remote management

Connected technologies allow compatible signals and sites to be monitored remotely. Where appropriate, information can be reviewed and some changes can be made without travelling to the site, helping to avoid unnecessary journeys.

Designing for a longer service life

We aim to produce durable, maintainable equipment that can remain in service for many years. Servicing, repair and the responsible management of reusable or recyclable materials all contribute to reducing waste and supporting a more circular approach to manufacturing.

Traffic Group Signals has committed to reducing its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030 against a 2024 baseline. We have also committed to achieving net zero carbon by 2050 at the latest.

Safer, greener and more efficient roadworks

Our goal is to give customers the equipment, technology and support they need to deliver safer and more effective temporary traffic management.

By bringing together established signalling experience, modern engineering, connected technology and specialist professional support, Traffic Group Signals is helping temporary traffic control develop beyond traditional standalone signals into a more intelligent and integrated part of the transport network.
