Endurance Charger safety guidance
Always follow these precautions when installing or using an Endurance Charger Panel.
Charging-area safety
- Install and use the charger indoors in a sheltered, well-ventilated location.
- Keep the charging area clear.
- Keep sparks, flames and other ignition sources away from batteries. Batteries can release explosive gases while charging.
- Wear suitable personal protective equipment when installing the charging system and when handling or charging batteries.
- Follow your organisation's working procedures and complete an appropriate risk assessment.
- Only trained and instructed people should use the charging system.
Battery safety
- Only charge compatible rechargeable 12 V lead-acid batteries with a capacity between 50 Ah and 150 Ah.
- Do not charge a frozen or non-rechargeable battery.
- Do not use the Li-ion or High charging modes for traffic signal batteries. Use Normal mode.
- Battery acid is corrosive. If it comes into contact with skin, rinse the affected area immediately with water and follow your organisation's first-aid procedure.
- Regularly inspect batteries, charging leads and connectors for damage.
- Do not use a battery, lead, connector or charger that appears damaged.
Electrical safety
- The charging panel must be installed by a licensed or certified electrician.
- The incoming supply must be protected by a 16 A overcurrent device.
- Mains connections must comply with applicable electrical regulations.
- Do not use the system if the AC power cable is damaged.
- Do not remove or open the charger casing. There are no user-serviceable parts inside, and opening the casing is dangerous and will void the warranty.
- The charging system must receive an annual portable appliance test (PAT) by a certified professional.
Safe connection order
Connect the system in this order:
- Make sure the AC power supply is switched off.
- Connect the charger's Anderson connector to the battery connector.
- Switch on the AC power supply.
Disconnect the system in the reverse order:
- Switch off the AC power supply.
- Disconnect the Anderson connectors between the battery and charger.
- all charger status LEDs begin flashing;
- an electrical protection device trips;
- you see sparks;
- you notice an unusual smell;
- a battery becomes unusually hot; or
- a cable, connector, battery or enclosure is damaged.
Switch off the system, disconnect the equipment safely and contact Traffic Group Signals for advice. Do not try to open or repair the charger yourself.
