How to charge a traffic signal battery with the Endurance Charger
This article outlines how to charge your Evo ACM and Evo1 batteries with the Endurance Charger system.
This procedure applies to compatible 12 V lead-acid traffic and AGM signal batteries between 50 Ah and 150 Ah. You can follow the steps below for on-board and off-board charging of signal batteries.
Before you begin
- Make sure the charging area is clear and well ventilated.
- Wear the required PPE.
- Inspect the battery, Anderson connectors and charging cable. Do not use damaged or corroded equipment.
- Allow the batteries to reach a suitable temperature if they have just come from cold/hot environments.
- Make sure the charger is switched off.
Start charging
- Connect the charger's Anderson connector to the battery connector, either directly to the battery itself or via the signals onboard charging port.
- Switch on the AC power supply or charger panel.
- Check that the Test LED illuminates or flashes.
- Confirm that Normal mode is selected. Do not select High or Li-ion mode for traffic signal batteries.
- Allow the charger to complete its automatic test and begin charging.
The Test LED will continue to flash until a charging pulse raises the battery voltage above 12.5 V or two minutes have elapsed.
Check charging progress
- Bulk illuminated: the charger is supplying its maximum charging current. The battery is normally below approximately 80% charge.
- Abs illuminated: the charger has entered the absorption stage. The battery is approximately 80% charged and may be returned to service if necessary.
- Float illuminated: the battery is fully charged and ready for use.
- Storage illuminated: charging is complete, and the charger is maintaining the battery for longer-term storage.
For the best battery life, allow the battery to complete some or all of the Absorption stage on every cycle. The guide recommends completing a full Absorption stage at least once every five charging cycles.
Stop charging and disconnect
- Switch off the AC power supply or charger panel.
- Disconnect the Anderson connectors between the battery and charger.
- Return the charging lead to its cable-parking point.
Never disconnect the battery while the charger remains powered.
