Understanding different operating modes
This guide outlines the different operating modes you will find across our range of temporary and portable traffic signals.
Summary
Depending on the system deployed, signal users with have access to a range of different operating modes, which should be carefully selected depending on local traffic volumes and system application.
Modes
|
Mode |
Behaviour |
Typical use |
Product |
|
Cableless Linking Facility (CLF) |
Uses carefully set intergreen times and stage transitions on a planned schedule that adapts to local conditions each day. |
Offers the greatest level of signal control for complex and critical schemes, designed and implemented by our Pro Services team. |
Metro, Evo1 Pro |
|
Smart Vehicle Actuation (Smart VA) |
Enabled phases use configured timings and respond to FMCW detectors. |
Recommended by the manual for most multiphase situations. |
Evo1, Evo ACM, RadioConnect2 |
|
AutoGreen |
Optimises two-way shuttle working. |
Recommended by the manual for two-phase shuttle configurations. |

Fixed Time |
Enabled phases use configured timings; vehicle detectors are ignored. |
Controlled situations where fixed cycling is required. |
All products |
|
Manual |
Phases respond to panel demand buttons; detectors are ignored. Minimum green is 12 seconds and maximum green depends on operator action. |
Direct operator control. Correct all-red settings remain essential. |

Hold All Red |
Forces all signal heads to red until the mode is changed or the call is cleared. |
Temporary blockage, heavy plant movement, or an incident. |
All products |
|
Lights Off |
The controller continues operating internally while all signal aspects are extinguished. |
Controlled shutdown/decommissioning step. |

Selection guidance
- Verify the approved traffic-management plan and configured phase/timing values.
- Consider whether the scheme would benefit from safer, stage-based signalling.
- Use AutoGreen for a suitable two-phase shuttle site.
- Use Smart VA for most multiphase sites unless site conditions require another mode.
- Use Fixed Time or Manual only with an operational reason and active monitoring.
- Observe initial cycles and confirm safe clearance before leaving the system unattended.
Important: In Manual mode, incorrect all-red times can release an opposing phase too soon.
