What is a Scheme Data Pack?

This article outlines the purpose of a Scheme Data Pack and why it is important when delivering Pro Services schemes.

What is a Scheme Data Pack?

A single source of information for a Pro Services temporary signalling scheme.

A Scheme Data Pack is a version-controlled document containing the design specification and essential operational information for a temporary traffic signal scheme designed by the Traffic Group Signals Pro Services team.

It provides everyone involved in the scheme with a single point of truth, helping ensure that the correct equipment, layout and settings are used throughout preparation, deployment and operation.

What information does it contain?

The exact content will depend on the type and complexity of the scheme.

A Scheme Data Pack may include:

  • Scheme name, reference number and site address
  • Controller type and operating mode
  • Site location and traffic management drawings
  • Signal, pedestrian crossing and detection equipment locations
  • Radar or detector configuration
  • Signal phases, stages and permitted stage changes
  • Conflict, red time and intergreen matrices
  • Minimum and maximum stage timings
  • Timing diagrams
  • UTC and CLF settings, where applicable
  • Site-specific instructions and safety considerations
  • Key contacts and support details
  • Equipment quantities and a detailed kitting list
  • Battery quantities, expected runtime and recommended battery swap schedule

The pack may also contain annotated plans and photographs to clarify the required position of equipment or highlight important site instructions.

Why is the Scheme Data Pack important?

Temporary signalling schemes can involve multiple organisations and teams, including traffic management providers, installation crews, customers, highway authorities and the TGS Pro Services team.

The Scheme Data Pack brings the approved design information together in one place.

This helps teams to:

  • Prepare and load the correct equipment
  • Install signals and detection equipment in the intended positions
  • Configure the scheme using the approved settings
  • Understand how the signal stages should operate
  • Follow site-specific safety and operational instructions
  • Plan battery changes and ongoing site visits
  • Find the correct support contact when assistance is required

Using one controlled document reduces the risk of teams working from different drawings, settings or instructions.

How is the document version controlled?

Each Scheme Data Pack has a version number and records when it was last updated and who made the change.

The scheme design log provides a history of important revisions, reviews and approvals. This may include changes to signal timings, stage orders, detector settings, equipment positions or other parts of the design.

Always check that you are working from the latest approved version before preparing equipment, installing the scheme or changing its configuration. Older copies should not be used once a newer version has been issued.

Who should use the Scheme Data Pack?

The pack is intended for everyone involved in preparing, approving, deploying, supporting or operating the temporary signalling scheme. This may include:

  • Customers and project managers
  • Traffic management teams
  • Installation and commissioning engineers
  • Depot and equipment preparation teams
  • Highway authority representatives
  • TGS Pro Services and support teams

Different users may refer to different sections, but everyone should use the same current version.

What should I do if the site or scheme changes?

Do not make an unapproved change to the design or rely on an earlier version of the pack.

If the traffic management layout, equipment requirements, site conditions or operating needs change, contact the TGS Pro Services team. The design can then be reviewed and, where required, an updated version of the Scheme Data Pack can be issued.

Need help?

If you are unsure which version to use, cannot match the site to the design or need help with the scheme settings, contact TGS Pro Services before continuing.
